We propose to investigate the photoresponse of anisotropic two dimensional (2D) materials by using laser spectroscopy and low energy and linearly polarized lights. We will first mechanically exfoliate anisotropic two 2D material flakes and characterize their anisotropic crystallinity by laser spectroscopy including Raman, reflection and photoluminescence. We then observe novel phenomena such as WTe2 anomalous negative photocurrents under three steady-state light irradiations: visible (514.5 nm), mid and far infrared (3.8 and 10.6 μm) lasers at room temperature. Our work will explore that linearly polarized light irradiation is an effective approach to tune anisotropic flake surface electronic structure and may induces large anomalous anisotropic photocurrents. Furthermore, the resultant large and anisotropic photoresponse demonstrates an advantage in designing infrared light detectors even at room temperature.
